Job Posting - Polo Manager
Hong Kong Polo is seeking an experienced and motivated Polo Manager to join our team in establishing the first dedicated polo school in Hong Kong. The brand new equestrian facility will be a short 30 minute drive from Hong Kong’s city center. The successful candidate will play a central role in teaching polo lessons, retraining off-the-track thoroughbreds (OTTBs) into polo ponies, and supporting the daily running of the club.
This role requires a balance of teaching ability, horsemanship, leadership, and stable management. The ideal candidate will have experience in both player development and horse training, and be committed to maintaining the highest standards of horse welfare and instruction.

Duties

Deliver polo lessons to riders of all levels, from beginners to intermediate players.
Conduct theory lessons covering rules, tactics, and horsemanship.
Support lesson planning and progression pathways to ensure a positive learning experiences
Assist with junior and youth development programmes.

Retrain off-the-track thoroughbreds (OTTBs) into polo ponies, specifically for arena polo, in alignment with HKJC’s Restart Programme.
Select suitable horses from HKJC’s retraining pool and continue their development into polo.
Train and school lesson horses and livery horses to maintain fitness and readiness for play.
Ensure horse training methods prioritise welfare, safety, and soundness.

Oversee, support, and coordinate the grooms’ daily routines and responsibilities.
Conduct a daily check of assigned polo stables and horses between 7:00am and 8:30am.
Submit weekly reports on horse health, training progress, and operational matters.
Ensure horses are fit, well-maintained, and suitable for lessons.Recognise signs of illness or injury and report immediately to the Polo Manager or veterinary team.
Uphold cleanliness, order, and safety standards across the stables and training facilities.
Work with administration to maintain regular communication with farriers, veterinarians, and other equine-related stakeholders.
Allocate horses for daily lessons, schooling, turnout, etc.
Requirements
Minimum handicap of 0 goals on grass (recognised by HPA, USPA, or ARP).
Proven experience in polo instruction and horse training, with credible references.
Experience teaching in a polo school (HPA/USPA/ARP-accredited preferred but not required).
Strong knowledge of retraining thoroughbreds for polo, with practical examples.
Excellent horsemanship skills & stable management experience, with an emphasis on welfare and soundness.
First aid and safeguarding certifications (or willingness to complete upon hiring).
Strong communication skills in English.
Preferred (But Not Required) Qualifications
Polo Instructor certification (HPA/USPA/ARP equivalent).
Any relevant equestrian qualifications (e.g. BHS accreditation).
Compensation
Monthly salary of 35,000 HKD (approximately 4,500 USD).
Furnished accommodation: private bedroom with shared living room and kitchen with one other instructor. After two working years, the Polo Manager will be provided a private, furnished apartment or residence.
Shared car provided between each instructor household.
Premium health insurance with dental benefits.
Annual overseas travel allowance (return flight).
15 days of paid annual leave, plus 15 paid statutory holidays. After the first working year, paid annual leave increases to 20 days.
Additional Information
This is a full-time role based in Hong Kong. Our team will support the chosen candidate in their relocation process.
Standard working days range from Tuesday to Sunday (5.5 days a week). After the second working year and subject to growth, working days will be 5 days a week.
Weekend and evening work may be required to support lessons, events, and competitions.
All candidates working with youth will be required to complete safeguarding training and hold the necessary clearances.
Hong Kong Polo will support the candidate in procuring a working visa for employment in Hong Kong.
